What Is the ASTEC® Re-Ply™ Roofing System for Metal Roofs?
The ASTEC® Re-Ply™ Roofing System is a fluid-applied restoration system for eligible metal roofs. It’s designed to address surface preparation and finish coats so the existing roof can be restored with a seamless, reflective, weathertight membrane.
A typical Re-Ply™ metal roof process includes the following six stages:
1. Prepare Surface Tighten or replace loose fasteners. Remove scaling rust and pressure wash to achieve a clean, sound roof surface.
2. Encapsulate Corrosion as Needed Apply ASTEC B-16-71 Rust Control specially formulated to neutralize and halt further metal roof corrosion.
3. Seal Fasteners Tighten or replace any loose fasteners. Encapsulate every fastener with ASTEC WPM #9 fluid membrane to insure a watertight seal.
4. Seal Seams & Flashings Reinforce all seams, flashings, and penetrations with high tensile strength fabric saturated with ASTEC WPM #9 fluid membrane, or use WPM #10 fiber-reinforced fluid membrane.
5. Apply First Layer Apply the first layer of either ASTEC #900 Ceramic Finish, or ASTEC #2000 Finish for a tough, weatherproof membrane.
6. Apply Final Layer Apply the second application of either ASTEC #900 or ASTEC #2000 Re-Ply finish to the roof. This results in a seamless, highly reflective "cool roof" that remains durable, weathertight, and pliable. Impervious to many airborne corrosives, ASTEC roofs have proven performance over 100's of millions of square feet.

What Makes a Seamless Coating System Useful for Metal Roofs?
Metal roof leaks often begin where panels are joined, fastened, or interrupted by rooftop components. Seams and penetrations create areas where movement and weather exposure can open small water entry points.
A seamless coating system helps cover the prepared roof surface with continuous protection. When fasteners, seams, and penetrations are treated first, the finished membrane helps reduce the weak points that allow water into the building.
Why Does Fastener Sealing Matter on Metal Roofs?
Fasteners are one of the most common failure points on aging metal roofs. Over time, screws can loosen, washers can wear, and small gaps can form around the fastener head that weaken the roof’s weathertight protection.
Sealing each fastener helps restore protection at these repeated attachment points across the roof. With ASTEC WPM #9 fluid membrane, fasteners can be encapsulated to help create a watertight seal before the finish coats are applied.
How Does ASTEC B-16-71 Rust Control Work?
Rust can spread when exposed metal continues reacting with moisture and air. If corrosion is left untreated before coating, it can weaken the surface and interfere with the long-term performance of the roof restoration system.
ASTEC B-16-71 Rust Control is applied where corrosion needs to be addressed before the roof is fully coated. It’s formulated to neutralize rust and help halt further corrosion so the roof surface is better prepared for the next stages of the Re-Ply™ system.
How Are Metal Roof Seams Reinforced Before Coating?
Seams, flashings, and penetrations need added attention because they handle drainage exposure and transitions between materials. These areas are more likely to develop leaks than the open metal panel field.
Reinforcement helps strengthen those vulnerable points before the finish layers are applied. Depending on the roof condition and specification, high-tensile fabric saturated with ASTEC WPM #9 or WPM #10 fiber-reinforced fluid membrane may be used.
Areas commonly reinforced include:
- Panel seams: These joints can move over time and need added waterproofing support
- Flashings: These transitions help protect edges, curbs, and roof changes
- Penetrations: Pipes, vents, and equipment openings need careful sealing
- Fastener rows: Repeated attachment points can create leak risks if left exposed
- Roof transitions: Changes in plane or material often need reinforced protection
